Bitizens are the driving force of the Tiny Tower. They live in the apartments, work on the other floors and post on BitBook from the tower.

Every Bitizen has a birthday. On a Bitizen's birthday, the player will be gifted one Tower Bux.

According to NimbleBit developer Ian Marsh, as of the 1.1 update, there are 4,294,967,295 Bitizens. The number he is referring to is the largest 32 bit integer possible, hinting that Bitizens are likely randomly generated.

Names

Further information: MaleNames, FemaleNames, LastNames

Each Bitizen has a Unique ID which is represented in the save file as the 's' value. This is their seed for the random number generator used to calculate most attributes for the Bitizen. The seed is used to calculate if the Bitizen is Male or Female (rand()&0x01), and then based on that, the game pulls from 2 lists of first names, and also a list of last names (rand() %300 two times). If the full name is longer than 15 characters long (including the space between names), the 1st name is truncated to the initial followed by a period.

Birthday month is picked (rand()%12), then based on the month, a day is picked (rand()%(31|30|28) ). It appears that leap days are not available in this case, but that is not 100% confirmed.

On iOS, the seeds are actually only 2^31 long as the random number generator doesn't do a full 32 bit random. see Apple Carbon lib on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_congruential_generator for more information.

Skills are determined for each Bitizen by their seed value as well. To calculate each skill, take the skill you want (1 through 5), and multiply it by their seed value, then feed that into the seed for the random number generator and take the 1st random out and take the modulus 10 of it. i.e., srand(skill * seed), rand()%10.

Appearance

Further information: Accessories, Costumes

Bitizens are purely two dimensional beings, standing about 16 or 17 pixels high on average, though posts on Bitbook mention characters 20 pixels tall.

Each Bitizen has a unique appearance derived from a large set of possible skin colors, hair colors, clothing colors, and accessories. Each Bitizen that lives in the tower can be redressed at will through their character panel for free. Though their skin and hair colors will remain, hair styles and all of their clothes and accessories will be re-randomized. Bitizens can be further customized with the use of purchasable costumes, for the price of a small handful of Tower Bux. Both these functions are useful for Color Coding.

Work

Skill 4 or less, unemployed
Skill 5 or greater
Dream job

Similarly, each Bitizen has different skill proficiencies that apply to each category of work — whether Food, Service, Recreation, Retail or Creative — and a Dream Job, both of which the player can use to his or her advantage when hiring at or stocking businesses.

Bitizens will be marked with a green happy face when employed at their dream job. When unemployed, or their proficiency for their job is less than 5, they will be marked with an unhappy face. A neutral yellow face is used in other cases.

As Bitizens are deep, complicated creatures, they have their own Facebook, too. They announce news about their employment, stocking and roommates, wonder aloud about the nature of their existence, and admit to playing other NimbleBit games on the job.

Advertisement or not, though, BitBook is a fun place to go if you want to lighten up a bit after buying that 375,000 coin floor. Bitizens also have the ability to "Like" a BitBook post, which the game will randomly do. And as the amount of Bitizens in your tower grows, so do the amount of comments in BitBook, which adds to the charm and laughs.

Time Travel

Bitizens are adept at time travel via the settings on your device. Be forewarned, however, that when setting the time back to the current date/time a Bitizen may be lost in a horrific Time Travel Accident. The Bitizen will be immediately gone from your tower. (this will only happen on version 2.0 and later)
